The Scappoose: Cottage House Plan with Master on Main

Not all small cottage house plans are created equal. Some are cramped and dark – too awkward to enjoy as a family. Think of the Scappoose as the total opposite. This light-filled, compact home is small enough to be called a cottage but designed so well that any family could happily share it. Let’s take a look at these house plans. Cottage lover or not, you’ll enjoy touring this Craftsman-style, cottage home.

Entering into the foyer, you see a coat closet directly before you. The front garage and rear master suite are to your left; we’ll take a look at them a bit later. As we turn to the right, we find ourselves in the shared “family triangle” – an open space occupying half of the main floor that includes the kitchen, dining room and vaulted great room. The kitchen is in front; its sink overlooks the front porch. Gourmands will love cooking in this kitchen, as the generous food preparation space is situated in a convenient U-shape. An extra stretch of counter between the kitchen and dining space serves as a high bar on one side and a kitchen counter on the other – perfect for cooks who like to socialize.

The dining room is next; it has nine-foot ceilings and a couple of windows onto the side yard. Finally, the gorgeous great room completes the communal area in the Scappoose. A set of sliding doors off the back off the great room leads to a back patio. To the right of the sliding doors is a fireplace; a set of stairs to the second floor lies to the left.

But before we head upstairs, let’s tour the master suite area on the other side of this floor. We walk back through the great room and dining room and into a hallway that connects to the garage, the master bedroom, a half bath and the utility room. The utility room, where the washer and dryer would go, is at the end of the hall. It has a window onto the side yard. The door to the two-car garage is next to the utility room. A half bath (perfect for guests) is nearest to the shared space; it’s the first door on the right in this hallway. Second on the right is a set of double doors leading to the master suite.

With 9-foot ceilings and a double set of multi-paned windows onto the back yard, this master bedroom is the perfect retreat. A pocket door to the master bath provides privacy while preserving the space a standard swinging door would require. Side-by-side twin sinks are before you as you enter the master bath; the toilet and shower are behind another pocket door to the right, while a square walk-in closet is to the left.

Our tour of the first floor is complete, so we wind our way back through the Scappoose to the stairs in the great room. There can be three or four bedrooms on this level. If you choose, you can wall off the loft, creating a fourth bedroom. If you keep the loft space open, it looks down onto the great room below. The second and third bedrooms on this level come complete with generously sized closets and windows. The bedroom at the top of the stairs is vaulted; its double multi-paned windows look onto the street. The shared bath on this level has a shower-tub. One unique feature is a built-in computer space between the bathroom and the stairs. A shared linen closet rounds out this floor.

The Scappoose proves that good design can come in small packages. It’s possible to enjoy flow and airiness in a small home – as long as designers include plenty of natural light and high ceilings. Your family would be right at home in the Scappoose.
