The Nehalem: Small House Plans with Craftsman Style & Charm

The Nehalem is a set of cozy Craftsman home plans that can grow and shrink with your family. Although these small house plans are just 1966 square feet total, they feel spacious for families of all sizes. With a master suite on the main floor, the Nehalem is ideal for aging in place. During child rearing years, three upstairs bedrooms provide plenty of accommodations. Should a boomerang child or aging parent need a place to stay, you’ll always have the space in the Nehalem. Let’s take a tour of this home.

Three gables and a covered porch supported by tapered square columns create a welcoming entrance. On the left: a two car garage. The front door is in the middle, and the covered porch to the right. Walking through the front door, we enter the functional entry, with 9-foot ceilings and a storage closet for coats and gear. The dining room, great room, and kitchen are all contained in an open area to the right. Tall ceilings and no dividing walls—that’s what it takes to make small house plans feel this open and airy.

We step into the kitchen, which overlooks the front porch. Indeed, parents can keep an eye on the little ones while washing dishes, since there’s a front facing window over the sink. The kitchen has a U-shape, with counters on three sides and an extra peninsula jutting out to create a shared space for socializing and food prep. This peninsula acts as a divider between the kitchen and dining room.

With 9-foot ceilings and a window onto the side yard, the dining room will make the perfect place for holiday meals with the family. A support beam visually separates this space from the great room.

The vaulted great room is the heart of the Nehalem. Its sliding doors open onto a back patio. A corner fireplace will make this communal living area feel cozy even on the darkest days. The staircase to the second floor is located in this room. But before we head upstairs, let’s follow the hallway opposite the dining room. A half bath is the first thing we see; it’s perfectly located for guests. At the end of the hallway is a utility room with washer and dryer. On the left is the entrance to the garage, with another storage closet. Finally, a double set of doors leads to the master suite, in the quiet rear of the home.

The master suite has nine foot ceilings and two big windows overlooking the backyard. The master bath, with its twin sinks and separate toilet/shower space, is found just off the master bedroom. A walk-in closet completes the suite and offers plenty of storage.

Winding our way back to the staircase in the great room, we ascend to the top story. The Nehalem house plans are unique in their offering of choice between a loft at the top of the stairs, overlooking the great room, or a fourth bedroom that can be walled off for privacy. Two more bedrooms are located on this level. The front-facing bedroom is stunning, with a vaulted ceiling and three street-facing windows. Each bedroom (including the loft) has its own generous closet.  There’s also a shared linen closet and bath. Finally, we’ll point out an unusual design detail: a built-in computer desk tucked in between the shared bath and the staircase.

The Nehalem is flexible, beautiful, and comfortable for families of all sizes.
