Prairie Style House Plans
Prairie style homes feature a low pitched roof, usually hipped, with a wide overhang, and have boxed shapes with a horizontal emphasis. They typically feature clean lines with massive square porch supports, and casement windows in rows.
At the dawn of the 20th century, a group of Chicago architects introduced one of the first truly American architectural styles, known as “ Prairie School,” or simply “Prairie” house plans. This group of architects, led by the famous Frank Lloyd Wright, aspired to create designs that melded art with architecture. Shunning classical rules, the movement aspired to create home plans that existed in harmony with nature and that created minimal intrusion upon the landscape. Details, such as low, horizontal lines, overhanging eaves, and connection between indoor and outdoor spaces signal an appreciation for solar patterns and suggest a visual relationship with the Midwestern plains. The spirit of Prairie-style home plans remains alive in these designs from Alan Mascord Design Associates, Inc. Low-slung rooflines, a lack of ornamentation, and rows of square windows permeate the designs for a look of clean simplicity.
